TV dog

Our dog, Blaze, arrived here in November 2008, so has been living with us for 15 months now. He has settled down (well, he should have by now, shouldn't he?) and this has allowed his unique personality to shine through.

And what a beautiful personality he has! He is the perfect family dog, obedient, uncomplaining, easy to train, sociable with both humans and other dogs and incredibly good with children. He's extremely good looking too (it turns out that he has an excellent show dog pedigree, but we're not interested in showing him). Everyone loves him. I didn't really want a dog, but he has won even me over!

One of his little idiosyncrasies is that he watches the tv.

He's got quite good taste. For example, he doesn't watch any soaps (ooops! - have I offended anybody?) or trashy movies. He prefers intellectually challenging nature programmes. He likes to watch dogs, of course, but also most other animals. When he hears animal noises, his ears prick up, he sits up and pays attention to the tv screen. If he hears distressed animals, he cries; with cross animals, he barks. It's quite amusing!

For some unknown reason, he has adopted me as the leader of the pack, and although he has got very affectionate towards me, he is not possessive.

At this time of year, we go walking on the beach more often than inland. The reason - Blaze always comes home from the beach clean. Additionally, he loves swimming. As soon as we get to the water, he runs straight in and splashes around. Afterwards he often swims in deeper water. Here he is during a short winter twilight walk.

I've posted pictures of the beaches near my house before, but never pictures I took during the short winter twilight. Following is a selection.

I love these walks on the deserted twilight beaches. Since Blaze came on the scene, I think I'm becoming a bit of a softie!

He's a cutie! I reckon he has taste too ;)

Lovely pictures of your beach! I'd love to go hunting for shells and fossils in those rocks. The shore is just a sublime place to be, and having a dog to walk is the best of reasons to go there often. I don't know about you, but it feels so much more relaxed to aimlessly amble along where the dog wants to go than to walk alone for no particular reason. No wonder you've grown to love him too.

Nice post Robert. Enjoyed it lots. x

Hi Robert,

Great photos, especially the last one. I can appreciate your love of twilight walks on the beach. The colours are beautiful at that time.

All the best

I love your dog!!! Mine loves to watch animal planet and shows with kids on them (who make a lot of noise and sometimes cry). dogs are great because they want to please you and feel like they are part of the family. like you, I bet blae loves walks on the beach.

your photos are beautiful! wish there was a place around here that looked like that!

Hi Cc! You are soooo right! Walking with the dog beats walking alone 1,000 times over. You'd like our beaches - you can often find 3,000,000 years old fossils here and some shells (not these beaches' forte).

Hi Stephany, AP & The Nakamuras! I found the dog-watching-the-tv amusing too. Dogs don't have good eyesight, so I'm not sure what he can see - but he can certainly identify many of the sounds.

I'm totally aware that I am living in an area of exceptional beauty (even if the climate isn't ideal) and I realise just how lucky I am! I'll be posting more photos of the area in later posts.

He is so pretty! And did you know that the ocean water is good for his skin? It will cure any skin ailments he has plus it gets bugs off him :)

Hi Nechtan! Thanks for the compliment about the pics. All taken on my mobile phone! I often have to tweak the pics to bring out the colours a bit. Perhaps I should invest in a proper camera?

i can see why you adore him. so cute and loveable its hard not to. and what great pictures blaze in the sea, i bet he loves it. x

Hi agoraphob! So your dog watches telly too? Should we ask the tv companies to have a channel for tv-watching dogs? :0)

Robert said...

Hi ♥ Kathy! Yes, I knew about the benefits of sea water. But the best thing is that it's clean! No washing of dogs required when I get home!

Hi Em! You know all about how good a companion a dog can be, don't you? Blaze is loveable and cute. Your dog is cute too, but possibly looks better at your side than at mine! ;0)

Hi Robert,

Its hard to say. It probably boils down to whether its a hobby or not. For someone with an interest in photography as a hobby then it is worth investing in a DSLR. If its just for general picture taking then mobiles and compact cameras are adequate I would say. You get such great shots from your phone as it is. On top of that you won't get anything more portable.

I already had a phone- not that an agoraphobic needs a phone. The reason I got a decent compact camera was for capturing the kids. As you know having young ones you want them to have photos, or video, to look back on when they are older. Since getting my camera though I've been bitten by the photography bug and would like a DSLR so I can take the photos I really want- that is a long way off though. In reality though if I am honest with myself I don't need one at the moment as I get by just fine with my compact.

All the best

Beautiful dog, beautiful wife, beautiful children... Robert, you really do make the most of everything. I must admit I'm a tad jealous. Does Marie do housework? Maybe I could borrow her? (Marie, if you are reading this, my hubby is not agoraphobic, but does suffer from undefined anxiety disorders, ADHD, and pain... not so much housework gets done, so I'm making a little joke about it.)

Beautiful dog...they're great companions aren't they? Has he learnt to use the remote control yet?

Hi Nechtan - You've just outlined some of the arguments I have with myself. If I had a great camera, would I take it out with me all the time? No - because most of the time when I go out one or more children are with me. I'm often laden with clothing, drinks, dog's leads, carrier bags for putting driftwood/fossils/shells into...you get the picture. But I always have my mobile with me. It's 5 mpixel. It shows its biggest failings when I'm attempting to take pics in low light or when I could do with a 40x optical zoom. I guess it'll do me for the meantime. Perhaps one day I'll get a really good real camera...

Hi Sapphyre! Marie is a pretty awful housekeeper. That is why we have 2 domestic staff - I wish! ;0)

Truthfully, Marie is cr*p at housekeeping and I'm not a lot better (although I have the excuse of being short of time), so this is not a very tidy home.

Nevertheless, life is pretty good for me at the moment. It wasn't always like that. I have had very bad relationships, debt, lived in a war zone, survived extortion rackets, lost a baby through cot death, watched ovarian cancer take 4 years to kill my mother, etc., etc. I am living proof that things can get better, just when you least expect them to!

Hi NB! - No, he hasn't learned to use the remote control yet. :0( It seems that the buttons on our remote control are designed for dogs with smaller paws!

maz said...

Hi Robert, my wee jackie watches T.V. too, unfortunately the only time she uses the remote control is when she sits on it - so not much if a success...yet! LOL

maz x

Robert said...

Hi maz! - My father in law has wee jackies. They're really intelligent - more than you would expect wee dogs to be. But like your jackie, they're useless with the remote control. ;0)
