Hello new baby, goodbye husband...

I am proud to announce the birth of my 5th grandchild, Matthew. His aunt and uncle - Orla and Joseph - are thrilled too, as is Marie.

He was 7lb 6oz (3.345kg) and delivered by caesarean section. Jenna was extremely anxious this morning, but once things got under way, sailed through the procedure. Despite previous worries, the birth was uneventful; mother Jenna and Matthew are both fine.

Babies never look their best just after birth, but c-section babies look better than those who have just been squeezed through the birth canal. Here is Matthew, aged 2 hours...

Do you think he has his grandfather's good looks???

I'll be planning a visit to Ireland to see him - and my daughter - soon.

While baby Matthew was making his entrance into our family, Colleen's husband, Jim, was making his exit. Married less than 8 months, the couple agreed to separate today. It appears that there is no hope of a reconciliation.

Colleen appears to be bearing up bravely, but having gone through too many similar episodes myself, I can empathise with her true feelings. Marie, who suffered an unpleasant breakup with her first true love, was similarly upset at the news. However, we are both hopeful that a better future awaits due course.

So it's a happy/sad day. Isn't that just typical of life?

Think of it as new beginnings for everyone!

The end of Colleen's marriage is a new beginning for her. It will be difficult and painful but, with a loving family to support her, she will survive!

Many congratulations!

He's certainly a little cutie and it's lovely to hear both mother and baby are well.

It seems as if there are a lot of separations happening at the moment :0( Best of luck to your daughter at this upsetting time.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm really looking forward to going to Ireland to see him - and his big sister Elisha (4) & mum Jenna.

Colleen is going to have a difficult time adjusting to the death of her relationship, and there's nothing I can do to stop that. However, she knows that I've always been there for her and always will, and she tells me that this helps. She'll have better times. She's just learning what oldies like me have learned from experience- life is full of ups & just have to make the best of the "ups"!

Hi Robert,

Congratualtions to baby Matthew, Jenna, yourself and all concerned. I hope all is well. I bet you cannot wait to get over to Ireland to see them.

That is sad news for Colleen. Breakups are never easy whatever the circumstances and take a long time to get over. I hope that time passes quickly for her.

All the best

Congrats on becoming a granddad. Sorry about Colleen though. If her ex can't stay more than 8 months, she's better off without him... a blessing in disguise methinks.

Nechtan - Baby & everyone else is well. As for Colleen, there's not much that can be done - she's got to get over it in her own way.

Rachael - I pass on your compliment to him when he gets older!

MH - Feeling broody?

rosiero - Colleen's sisters and I agree with you. We all felt that he was a bit of a control freak and was doing nothing for Colleen's self-confidence. Naturally no one would tell her that! Perhaps now she'll be able to "find herself" (it's an awful cliché, but you'll know what I mean) and have a better future.
